Elly May's Latest...

Is it not immortal, is it not divine? Elly May spent the afternoon locked up in the garage at her glass table and emerged with this . A salvaged blue, glass plate from a local thrift shop and add some dragon tears, a crystal, voila! A sun catcher. She is gonna sell it too... *sniff* .. maybe if we have some extra blue around she'll make me one. It's on ebay here.

Back to the Garden

We've got green tomatoes!!!! wheeeeee... (keeping our fingers crossed) .
Sunflowers. I can't wait. I love love love sunflowers.

Delicata squash in a barrel... we shall see how it does...

Elderberry bushes getting bigger. They came in small pots so I wanted to grow them out a bit before they go in the ground. They'll have a better chance that way. These came from Horizon Herbs.

Things are getting bigger!

New batch of arugula coming in. If you've never had it you are missing out!

Romano pole beans are a'climbing.

Purple and Genovese basil coming up.

Peppers showing up. Even despite our lack of warm weather.

My greens are getting bigger all the time...... Well... it is sort of like the song.

Onions.
Bolted arugula... it is so pretty.

Morning glory.... shall soon come down. It is already reaching for the tomato cages and we can't have that.

And we'll finish with something not edible . Well, that isn't true because you can eat rose petals. This is an Austin rose... Kathryn Morley. She is rather dashing at the moment .

Elly May's Latest Projects

Elly May has been very creative of late. And busy.. you know, aside from keeping us all fed and taken care off and the household running and all that little stuff..

She figured out how to braid leather for dog leashes. She is selling these....
And what do we smell??

Her "babies"

Where are they?

Aaaahh... there is the little guy. She is raising dermestids. Little beetles that eat flesh. Isn't that lovely? Why? you may ask, would a nice girl want flesh eating beetles? Well, to clean skulls of course! Didn't you know? Museums use them all the time. But you have to have a lot of them so they can get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. So she is breeding them to get her numbers up to something worthwhile. It kind of reminded me of how Robinson Crusoe saved the oats each year and kept replanting them and replanting them until he finally had enough for another crop and a loaf of bread. That took a lot of patience and self control. Not that flesh eating beetles are in the same category as oat saving so you can eat bread... but.... it sort of seemed similar.. sort of ..... maybe...
Until you have enough to clean a full skull, you can keep them alive on things like chicken bones , hamburger patties.... hot dogs... only ours can't have any because we don't have any either. So there. Tough luck guys. They have been breeding wonderfully and she has a lot more now than she had when I took this picture. Well, the picture is actually of the larvae... not a beetle itself but both the beetles and the larvae eat the flesh. They are rather interesting to watch. They move really fast and they don't like light so you have to look quick before the run for cover. We'll see how long it takes for her to get up enough for an actual project...
To be continued..

Just Because

Not sure what is up with this but he looks kinda grumpy...
That ear back totally helps..

You don't look grumpy at all ..... but would you get out from under my skirt?? You're a little too old and big for that now...

The Ick Factor

I was passing by an area by an orange tree outback recently and got a whiff of something none too pleasant... Hmmm... smells like something died... Then Elly May comes in the house and starts pulling gloves on and asks all excited like if I want to go do a photo shoot... "What did you catch?" .. Back tracking.. A while back, we decided to get some new rat traps to attempt to make a dent in the plague like numbers we seem to have around here devouring our fruit and so forth. So Mom found this one that actually zaps them with an electric current and they die instantly .. or so it says. Well.. it had been sitting out there a loooooong time and no results. BUT , apparently someone decided that peanut butter smelled too good and wandered in for a closer look. Last look he ever took. We'd given up checking the thing since it didn't seem to be catching anyone but the smell did catch our attention the other day. Thus... .. the photo montage... If you are squeamish.. I suggest you skip. I know I say that a lot but I'm just warning you ahead of time. There is no blood but it is kind of icky .

It had become quite aromatic by this point. I think it had only been in there a couple days at most.
I am dead...

Fly eggs. Isn't that lovely?

Very... hmmm. then when Elly May chucked it... (tossing it fairly vigorously...) the tail skin slipped off in her hand. Yes... she had gloves on but still.. that is ..... well.... gross. And sort of nauseating when you have the whole dead rat smell to go with it. .... and the fly eggs too of course... mmmmmm..

Those Updated Garden Shots.....

So I finally got out there with a camera to take new photos of the stuff. It is all a lot bigger than the last time I took pictures. Which is a good thing you know... because it means that stuff is actually growing.
Tomaters are bloomin'.

Don't they look happy?

Sage seedlings. I think I planted too many... you can only use so much sage and there is only so much room here. I'll just give some away ...

Busy busy pollinators.

Little jewels on the leaves. I love the dew drops.

Think we have enough onions? It looks like a lot but I know we use a lot of onions and I still don't think that is enough. But I don't have room for any more.

Arugula bolting is really pretty.

Whacked back kale and new beans coming up. These are Romano pole beans. An Italian variety that sounded very tasty. Elly May is all excited about making dilly beans. They are very very tasty and the easiest way to preserve green beans.

There are more beans in the back of each of those step beds. The mustard greens and wrinkled cress that were there got whacked back just like the kale.

The lettuce that was here finished up and now there is more arugula, more wrinkled cress and some mizuna coming up with cucumbers poked in around the edges so hopefully they will spill over the edges and vine out . We shall see how that works out.

Spaghetti squash coming up in the lower bed.

The lower bed with more tomatoes. These are all the determinate paste tomatoes that should hopefully all come in around the same time so there is enough to make lots of sauce , ketchup and plain canned tomatoes.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed... last year was kind of a wash out as far as our tomatoes were concerned.

Snap peas... that were left too long . But they still taste really really good.

Sunshine and spider webs.... so perfect. ;-)

Tomato Planting

I like spider webs... well , not walking into them of course , but as a photography subject , they are fun.

Here are the babies in the cold frame.. well , quite some time ago. Maybe two months ago? I can't remember. Anyway, they got tall in there quick.

So they had to move, the bed filled up more with all the compost we'd been making. Didn't think I'd ever get enough soil did you? Well , we got pretty close. Enough to plant in anyway. Here is the irrigation going in first.

Then because I was completely useless by this time , a dear friend planted them all for me. ;-) Wasn't that kind ?

They look so purdy.
I got about half way through planting the peppers before I had to quit and they did the rest.

If you are going to suffer from Chronic Fatigue it is really helpful to have friends who don't .
Things are really grown up now. And there are onions in among the peppers and so forth. I don't have pics of that yet though. Soon , maybe.
